Shot glass case

I had this done for a customer who wanted a case for her collection of shot glasses. Each cell had to be 4″w x 4d” but the height was designed to have variable heights based on a sketch up. It’s actually 5 feet long.
The 1″ thick case sides were made of maple, the inside was 1/2″ thick plywood with maple edge banding. Back panel was 1/4″ birch plywood.
I have to say I underestimated the work involved with this one. One small error in any dimension through each cell off exponentially and it’s easy to see these lines stray off square.
I had to redo it a couple times before I found a solid work flow.
I took it as a learning experience.

New tablesaw

I got a new tablesaw this week. I got it not only for the price but because it has a newer riving knife which my saw didn’t have so it’ll help against kickback issues. I have a few scars from wood being snagged against the fence/blade and launching back at me. A little work to get this but it’s well worth it. It’s a 3hp General 350.

Kitchen Table Beginning

I’ve started work on a kitchen table since mine is now falling apart. It’s going to be 3×5 feet, solid walnut top with maple stretchers and legs dyed black. The solid maple legs will be fairly beefy too, 3″x3″ square, tapered slightly to the bottom with a decorative design around the top portion.

Infill Plane Testing

I was given the chance to test out an infill plane made by Wayne Jepson, Caledon, On.
This is a really beautiful plane. Some of the shavings in the picture are on the heavy side for a smoother but I backed it off a little in the end. I tested it next to my Veritas Bevel-up smoother and the results were very similar in terms of shaving shape, thickness, consistency and board finish. The Veritas having a 2 1/4″ blade is much harder to push a full width shaving which makes this a different experience. The additional weight is also nice, it drives itself more.

Kitchen Cabinet Drawers

We had a cabinet that we piled out tupperware in and it avalanched whenever it was opened so I made some large deep drawers that pull out on soft close full extension slides. The drawers are made from 1/2″ thick maple, half blind dovetails with plywood maple bottoms spray finished with water-based poly.

Chest of drawers

I’ve finished the dresser at long last, it only took 3 years 🙂
The carcass is made of red oak plywood sides and back, then solid wood frame and everything else. It was supposed to be a baby change table but I thought I would make it into a chest of drawers with a slide out tray to sit powders, creams etc.
The drawer boxes are made from cherry with dowel joints with false ebony dowel plugs for looks, then the oak drawer fronts were attached to the boxes. No drawer slide hardware, it’s hardwood runners.

I finished it by spraying aniline dye mixed with polyurethane until it darkened enough. Then a few coats of clear finish.

Up to my ass in God boxes

I get some weird requests, someone wanted me to make them a few God boxes. The idea I’m told is you write something confidential down (wish, thought, evil doin’ and put it in the slot. The box can never be opened so it’s sent off to the spirits. Anywho, they liked it and ordered 10.

I never heard of them but they helped pay for my new lathe.

All made from solid birch, mitred sides, top and bottom are rabbetted. The logo was routed with a core box bit using a circle, then a square template. The slot was routed using a stopped guide.
Length 7″
Width 5″
Hight 3.5″
